Excavation Contractors And Their Key Responsibilities!

Huntsville, United States - December 7, 2022 / J Whit Construction /

The excavation part of any land or building project is the one that involves the most earthwork.

Excavation work is a step in the site preparation process that readies the land for building construction.

Still, there is more that excavation contractors are responsible for than simply digging trenches and leveling the ground, including these noted tasks.

1. Planning Participation

Though a construction project may be designed and planned by another company, excavation professionals do take part during the planning stages to lend their expertise to the project and help develop an overall executable plan.

2. Installing Site Access

During the preliminary phases of the project, excavation work is necessary to create access roads that can be used by heavy equipment to bring in supplies and work on the land.

These temporary access roads are critical for reducing the destruction of the land and ensuring all equipment and supplies can get safely where they need to without getting stuck.

3. General Site Excavation

Excavation contractors are responsible for various types of digging and earthwork at the construction site, from heavy ground leveling and grading, cutting and replacing soil to shape the land, and building up the ground in specific areas as required.

This stage of the process may also include soil remediation, replacing existing soil with a material of different makeup, and more.

4. Utility Trenching

After the land has been shaped and leveled as required for the project, trench excavation is done to prepare for underground utility installation and other infrastructure needs.

This stage includes trenching for the installation of sewers and drainage pipes, underground electrical lines as well as communication cables, and more.

5. Building Site Preparation

After trenching has been completed, excavation work continues with the preparation of the site where the building will be constructed.

This step usually includes compaction of the soil to prepare the base for construction and then digging out the area where the foundation will be built.

6. Drainage and Erosion Control

With the utilities installed and the building site prepared, excavation contractors move on to erosion control and the control of runoff water around the site and grounds.

During this stage, more grading is done to divert water away from the building site to protect the foundation and the ground is built up as needed to prevent erosion.

Drainage ditches, ponds, and other water containment areas are built as part of this water control step.

7. Roadways, Walkways, and Others.

Throughout the construction project, excavation work to dig, level, and install roadways, walkways, paths, and other vehicle and pedestrian passageways is also performed.

This work is then completed by paving contractors and walkway installers.

Excavation Work Is A Critical Part of the Construction Process

Excavation in its various forms plays a critical role in every construction project.

From the ground leveling that happens at the start of site preparation to the installation of roads at the end of the project and every process along the way, experienced excavation contractors are there to dig, move, and shape the soil as necessary to bring these projects to life!
